Cicero, 1st Century BC Overcome Augustine, Dionysius

Knowing they would have to carry the load to pull off an upset, both Augustine and Dionysius were on top of their games tonight, but neither were enough for the combination of low post power moves and sweet shooting that Cicero brought to the table, in leading the 1st century BC to a 72-71 overtime win over the 5th century AD.

“We knew that Augustine and Pseudo-Dionysius posed a significant challenge to our hegemony. So we simply but the ball in Cicero's hands and asked him to lead us to victory,” said head coach Caesar Augustus in the post-game press conference.

At times, the athletic play of Dionysius, who finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds, seemed to put the 5th century on the verge of victory, but in the end a game-tying three ball from Vergil sent the contest into overtime. From that point, Cicero ensured that his team won through a combination of pure grit and poise. Down by a point with only 5 seconds left in the overtime period, Cicero drained a jump shot from the elbow just inside the arc with Augustine’s hand in his face.

The 5th century was also hampered by their lack of quality guard play. St. Patrick and Prudentius simply were no match for Vergil and Ovid. Yet Augustine and Dionysius might have been able to carry the team had it not been for the excellent play of Cicero.

“Although I hate to admit it, Cicero simply outplayed us today. If out guards had played better, we might have been able to overcome him,” said an obviously bitter Jerome. The biblical scholar immediately backtracked, however: “But don’t think I’m some sort of Ciceronian. I support my teammates.”

The 1st Century will face Archaic Greece for the much-awaited matchup of Vergil and Homer.

Players of the Game
1st century BC: Cicero – 25 points, 14 rebounds.
5th century AD: Augustine – 18 points, 5 assists, 3 blocks.
